Assessing the Risk

Pick-up and Drop-off services cannot be booked independently of another service - they must be attached to another Pawshake booking. So while you are not operating a pet taxi service, there are still a number of pitfalls to consider.

Pet transport is most easily managed for dog minding services. That being said, it is important to remember that not all dogs temperaments may be suitable for this service. Conversely, not all dog sitter's will feel comfortable or have the resources to undertake pet transport.

There is no shame in declining the service for a dog or cat that you know is highly anxious or easily stressed. In those instances, it would be best for all if the owner co-ordinated the handover.

Before deciding to offer this service for a client, you should conduct a thorough risk assessment to ensure the safety of both the pet and your own well-being. This means evaluating the environment for potential hazards such as busy roads, unfamiliar animals, or unsafe areas.

You should also assess the pets temperament and behaviour, noting any signs of anxiety or aggression that could be triggered by the transition during a thorough Meet & Greet.

Pet Harnesses & Car Safety

Firstly, ensure you have the appropriate driving and vehicle license, and that the vehicle insurance is current and valid. Your vehicle should be equipped with appropriate restraints and checked for any objects that could cause harm during transport. Most states and territories have laws regulating how dogs must be restrained and where they can be seated in the car to avoid driver distraction. Please consult with your local regulatory body to ensure you are abiding by all legislation and staying safe.

For cats and smaller animals - ensure they have an appropriate carrier that they will not be able to get out of during the ride and cause distraction.

Before the Pickup

Communicate with the Pet Owner & follow up from the Meet & Greet

You should have already had your Meet & Greet and may have already exchanged this information, but it doesn't hurt to reach out again and clarify.

  • Confirm the pickup details: date, time, and location.
  • Discuss the pet’s routine, behaviour, and any special requirements.
  • Ask about the pet's health, including any medications or allergies.

Prepare Your Vehicle

  • Ensure your vehicle is clean and free of any hazards.
  • Use a pet carrier or harness to secure the pet during transit.
  • Keep a first aid kit, water, and a blanket in the vehicle.

During the Pickup

  • Approach the pet calmly to avoid causing any stress or anxiety.
  • Allow the pet to sniff and get comfortable with you before attempting to handle them.

Inspect the Pet

  • Check the pet’s collar and tags to ensure they are secure.
  • Make sure the pet appears healthy and is not showing any signs of distress.

Secure the Pet

  • Use a secure harness or carrier for small pets.
  • For larger dogs, use a seatbelt harness or place them in the backseat with a barrier.

Drive Safely

  • Avoid sudden stops and sharp turns.
  • Keep the pet calm by talking to them softly and playing soothing music if necessary.

Monitor the Pet

  • Regularly check on the pet to ensure they are comfortable.
  • If the trip is long, make regular stops for bathroom breaks and water.

During the Drop-Off

Communicate with the Owner

  • Inform the owner of your estimated arrival time.
  • Discuss any observations or concerns you had during the initial transit.

Gather Necessary Supplies

  • Bring the pet’s leash, collar, and any favourite toys or treats.
  • Have the owner’s contact information, emergency contact information and the pet’s veterinary details on hand.

Safely Transfer the Pet

  • Ensure the area is secure before releasing the pet.
  • Hand over any belongings, such as leashes, toys, or medications.

Update the Owner

  • Provide a brief update on the pet’s behaviour and condition during the transit.
  • Share any important information or observations about the pet.

After the Drop-Off

Follow Up

  • Check in with the owner after a few hours to see how the pet is settling in.
  • Be available to answer any questions or address any concerns the owner may have.

Document the Trip

  • Keep a record of the pickup and drop-off times, as well as any notable events.
  • Document the pet’s behaviour and any issues encountered during the trip.

  • Keep all necessary documents and supplies in a dedicated bag.
  • Use a checklist to ensure you don’t forget anything important.

Be Patient

  • Allow extra time for the pet to adjust to you and the new environment.
  • Remain calm and patient, especially if the pet is nervous or anxious.

  • Always use a secure harness or carrier.
  • Never leave the pet unattended in the vehicle.
